Hot Tub/Spa Contra-indications
Users who have any of the Medical Conditions below
should seek G.P approval before using the Hot Tub
- High Blood Pressure:
- the increased heat from a hot tub can have an undesired interaction with medication...........However if you are borderline and on no medication the effect from Vaso-dilation can lower your blood pressure and also reduce stress.
- Heart Disease:
- Heat and cold application that increase the heart rate and force of contraction may overwork an already weakened heart.
- Peripheral Vascular Disease:
- Atherosclerosis and Arteriosclerosis clients may have weakened arteries. Heat applications increase tissue metabolism and demand for oxygen making heat application contraindicated.
- Diabetes Mellitus:
- Advanced Diabetes - especially type I (juvenile onset) - can decrease the person’s sense of tissue damage especially in the lower extremities. The Vascular damage caused by this decrease blood flow to the tissues. However Diabetes type II can be helped as heat will cause Vaso-dilation and speed up circulation to the extremities.
- Pregnancy:
- Full body hot applications to a pregnant women are contraindicated as increased heat may damage the foetus and lead to birth defects.
- Cancer:
- Caution is advised when Hot or Cold applications can have an effect on your treatments so Physicians should always be consulted.
- Skin Lesions:
- Applications are contraindicated in the case of broken skin or other skin irritation or infectious/contagious conditions as are any one suffering from Tuberculosis.
- Diarrhoea:
- Any increased consistency of the bowel movements or Infective gastroenteritis
EXTENDED PERIODS OF SOAKING: In general 20 mins in a hot tub at a time can result in the body overheating and cause dehydration. Alcohol can have the same effect!
POST TREATMENT REST PERIOD – The body should be allowed to rest for at least a half an hour after your session to allow the body to return to normal.
ALWAYS SHOWER BEFORE YOU USE THE HOT TUB AND WASH OFF ANY COSMETICS OR SUNSCREENS OR BODY LOTIONS!
